Final Cut

Emulsion - Final

All over the place
Music: None
Feel: Tired

Well, now that Kanzen is back and I'm back on my own computer, having been back home the past week (between spring semester and summer semester) I figured it was time to dust off the old Digital Iris and check back in.

So.. what's new?

As I said, I spent the last week (well, 9 days) back on my old stomping grounds. It was odd being back home, back in my old room, watching my old TV. In lieu of my DVDs I even watched my old VHS anime tapes of Patlabor 1, Giant Robo, Here Is Greenwood, Otaku no Video and even Evangelion: Death & Rebirth *and* The End of Evangelion. I also finally watched part 1 of The Dark Myth, after it's sat on my shelf for.. oh... 5 years. I would have started re-watching all of Evangelion on VHS, but Sarah wants to sit down at watch it all next time she spends a weekend with me (ala our 24 marathon last time... woot). So I'll wait for that to experience it all again (albeit, having sold off most of my DVDs, I'm going to have to sit through most of it *DUBBED* on VHS... ugh).

I hung out a lot with Sarah - and Stefin, Talitha, Pat - etc - this past week. It felt a lot like last summer, with lots of coffee and cigarettes, but the only difference was that since they all have real lives and responsibilities now (= jobs) we had to call it a night a lot earlier than I'm accustomed to. I feel like such a freaking bum without a job. I *need* to make some money, legally if at all possible ^_^;

When I wasn't having coffee and cigarettes with Sarah et al. I was having beer and cigarettes with Finiak. The Finster recently moved and is now within 20mins of my house, and has become my official drinking mate (being the only friend I know that's 21 now...). It's fun to actually, you know, go to a bar with a friend rather than alone. Whenever I'm at a bar, drinking alone, I feel like some kind of lonely detective drowning his sorrows and trying to crack a case over Jack and Cokes and vodka tonics. I also caught a quick drink with Katie before she left back for Wisconsin and the land of no cell phones and no running water...

Lately I've been drinking beer a lot more, which I wouldn't have thought I'd be doing a year ago. I guess it's a carry over from the high school partying when beer was all that was really around. Sarah complained that I'm becoming "too much of a man" because of this. I'm not entirely sure why she made that sound like a bad thing.. hmm...

Well, Stray Radio is dead, for one thing. Pat has simply become too sporadic and, frankly, "undedicated" to the show to continue on. Pat's a different guy from when we began the show and he has new.. interests.. he'd rather tend to besides the program. Which is fine, I guess.. I just wish his new interests were a tad healthier. But what can I do?

However, I'm not ready to throw in the radio towel just yet. Kanzen Radio is taking the place of SR (just as no Alex = no OnR, no Pat = no SR). Pat will, probably - when possible (if it ever is), make appearances still but at the moment, it would seem David and Finiak will be the most consistent of co-hosts, with Richard Toler stepping up to bat some times. I dunno, I'm kinda happy about all this. SR really needed a major overhaul and while that may have otherwise meant dropping me, I have the distinct power as producer to keep myself in the mix. So there.

For all you loyal readers though, here's a sneak peek at what will probably be the website for KR. As you can tell, hopefully, by the new site - KR is going to be 'different' (I designed this page in about 2hrs tonight to rush for the new show to launch Wednesday night, with the Thursday leeway for screw ups). Ideally, I'd like to take the things that worked for OnR and the things that worked for SR, merge them, and strip it of the pitfalls of both. And yes, that will mean a shift in focus back towards anime - if only because I've actually been watching more of it again - but a lot of ranting on normal occurences and the banter of SR will be there. The "smut" and "shock jock" angle will also be toned down immensely (at least in terms of the blatant explicit content of the SR show). There's also another idea we're toying with, but I'll comment on that later if it comes to fruition.

In other news, and back to the world of Pat, we're about to start shooting the first part of a 3 episode web series I intend to run through summer. The script for the first episode is nearly complete, though it needs some revision and changes. The story has stemmed out of a very different script I originally wrote for a one-shot short, but grew out of that into something much more interesting... Hopefully the first episode will be able to run in July.

Well, it's about 6:30am and I'm still running and awake. David is lying in my bed next to me having passed out some 4 hours ago, but it's all good. I start Production I in 3 hours, which I'm kind of excited about since it's *finally* the first class where I get to shoot films. That will mean at least 3 new shorts, from me, this summer (the class ends in August). Some of these will probably be independant from Pat so there's going to be some diversity to these projects. A big concern of mine, working with Pat and Stu, is that their faces will become way too familiar as they appear in each and every film.

Speaking of this, I did a full re-edit of Emulsion, starting from scratch, and was able to cut it down 4 minutes and create a tighter, moodier, and better rounded version of the film. I'll have that version online in the coming weeks (maybe as soon as tomorrow.. if I can). I'm much happier with this cut than the 11min, somewhat(?) tedious version that I originally did. Except for the ending, which was done in one take, the rest is composed of alternate takes, and new angles, that weren't in the first version... I'm excited about it... :P
